Minecraft Beta 1.7_01 - Piston and Sticky Piston Bug

When a piston or a sticky piston is placed upwards (with the redstone input being located 1 block bellow) and a rapid pulse signal is applied to the redstone, if the player tries to break the piston or sticky piston with any item, block, tool, or hand, the piston or sticky piston will break, dropping an item, but leaving a breakable piston head in mid-air. This is a bug that I found in Beta 1.7_01, with the addition of pistons.

Great bug for decoration, but I have a question, does this work if the piston is facing down(so that when you break the block like this, you get a "spike," where the head faced down, and the extender is pointed up?
