it could have 1sec of day and 1sec of night and the temperatures would be the same, it depends on how much energy it can absorb from the sun, since it was no atmosphere, it would be very cold if it was at the same distance as Earth, but since it is very close to the sun, its hotter, look at Venus, is the hotter planet on the solar system because its atmosphere is very dense. Hope you got it :)

@LifeIsABigPuzzle mercury is at another distance from the sun then earth...

@LifeIsABigPuzzle Darwin award.

@LifeIsABigPuzzle It's still hotter because it is closer to the sun.
-
@LifeIsABigPuzzle Mercury hasn't got an atmosphere. Heat just disapates when the sun goes away and there's no protection as we have with earth from the sun's heat in day. There is no balance in temperature there.

@LifeIsABigPuzzle your not including the fact that its MUCH MUCH closer to the sun. Think of it this way... if you have a roaring campfire and let it die... 4 hours later, the ground under it will still be warm... now imagine that several thousand times larger in scale and you have Mercury... furthermore, the ground inches away from the campfire is similar to scale to that of Mercury's location... where as earth would be right around where you put your lawn chair to enjoy the fire.

2 billion miles in 3.5 years? Not bad.
-
@LifeIsABigPuzzle No, the temperatures change rapidly.

Simple geometric calculus however we are concerned with regards to the debris will it be expelled in to the path of venus, earth etc

I wish they would show what the sunrise looks like on Mercury.

If Mercury's days were only eight hours long, would the planet be a lot cooler? I mean if the planet had four hours for day and four hours for night, it might be just as temperate as earth. Let me know what you think.
