These engines were build using the design and plans by Jan Ridders, http://heetgasmodelbouw.ridders.nu/ ,The Netherlands.
I've build a fancy gift box for one of them, to act as a present for a gifted colleague.
Small design changes have been made due to materials at hand and personal preferences.
About 20 seconds after lighting the burner, a gentle spin on the flywheel will run the engine until all fuel has been used.
The engines do not have a prefered rotation direction.

  • Can i buy one of these from anywhere? could you build me one and sell me one?

  • @snakeyboizz

sorry, they can't be bought anywhere because these were made by myself.

I'm not building to sell, just for the fun of it.

  • You have more than one...would you like to sell me one ?

  • Sorry, I've build one for myself and one for a colleague. The twins have been separated and now live there own lives....

  • This is a very interesting design, as simple as it can be ! . It is so simple that it is difficult to explain why the people from ancient civilisations did not build similar engines...afterall they built a lot of complicated things back them.

Can you explain its operation ?

How does the burnt gases leave the cilinder ?

What is the black stuff inside the glass cilinder and what is it for ?

Wouuld it make sense to build this type of engine for real work, in a poor country say...?

  • The air inside the testtube is heated and cooled each piston stroke and does not leave the cilinder. Just like a Sterling engine. The black stuff is stainless steel turn rolling up or Scotch-Brite. It acts as a accumulator to store the heat, so it can be transfered to the air when passing by. This size and type of engine can be found in several videos here on YouTube, however I've not seen one on a larger scale, but perhaps it is possible!
