On the 2008 campaign trail, President Barack Obama promised social security would remain solvent forever under his administration, yet he is threatening to withold social security checks this year if the federal government defaults after the August 2 debt ceiling deadline.

@Mulligan71991 We get the money from free market solutions. we deregulate business, create an open and friendly environment that promotes healthy competition in the work force, which will create more jobs and increase revenue. We need to work on welcoming good and strong investments on U.S. goods and services. On top of that, tell Govt. to F. off.

@PMEWhite maybe your also from the upper middle class and are worried about you or your parents having to pay more taxes, but I mean something has to be done to pay off that debt, and the spending cuts cant be immediate. Economists and sociologists have considered the flat tax, it brings in less tax revenues, and life for the lower income families will probably=poverty, especially if you add an increased sales tax to that. In the end it all comes down to massive spending though.

@PMEWhite well over here we are going through austerity and things are getting better. if only your country and greece would do the same. here the middle class on average is paying 40-50% tax, thats fuckloads but the cost of living has subsequently gone down. i agree about the massive borrowing and spending, but the thing is the US is running out of money and most of that money is borrowed. but at the moment that borrowed money needs to be payed back, where to get the money from?

@Mulligan71991 No, you cannot say it is fair, when nearly half of Americans pay no taxes, it is true many top earners are able to receive govt. loopholes *ahem GE*, but it is the upper middle class that gets stuck with the bills, low income citizens pay nothing, and can still benefit with tax refunds. What is truly fair is a national flat tax, or increased sales tax. Truth is, taxes aren't even the issue, it's the massive borrowing and spending that is damaging our economy.

@PMEWhite because its fair, they pay a lower percentage of taxes than you do, not all the time, but a lot of the time. when my parents lived in america they hired someone to do their taxes to save money. that shows how many loopholes are in the system that they can be exploited.

@chillercm That's absolute nonsense, it is these very policies that are destroying our economy. We are paying out much more than we are getting in, it simply needs to end. Raising taxes on "the rich" never work, why would a business choose to work, or a citizen choose to live, in a country or state when they know they will be punished for their success?

@chillercm We need to decrease government, end all welfare entitlements, end the wars, pull our troops out of every country, close the 900+ military installations all over the world, audit and ban the Federal Reserve, deregulate the marketplace, REDUCE taxes, raising taxes never work. Cut spending. Also begin fostering a friendly environment for a free market system. Also get the U.S. out of the U.N. and NATO.

@PMEWhite yea but you should take steps in the meantime to get rid of that debt, cause as it stands every US citizen owes like 40,000 . Every Greek owes 50k. You can get rid of that by decreasing the size of the federal government, but I definitly dont think that money needs to be spent on Wars and that healthcare programms provided by the government free of charge for the taxes you pay is a good thing. Increasing taxes on those who are paying less taxes than you is also commmon sense.

70+ million lives depend on that money going out as it's legally bound to do per Social Security law. But not when you have a president that's got his fingers in his ears, going "la-la-la-laaa I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!!" to Republicans across the board, slamming vetoes on short-term legislation to keep checks coming--who are seniors, veterans and the disabled going blame before they're dead? If we really don't have 20 bill to pay SS beneficiaries, then it means this nation is bankrupt. If the only way to pay off these checks is to borrow money from China or whoever--hey, liberals, jus think about that--can't even pay the small debts without borrowing the money! Social Security checks will go out no matter what, but the pork and the pet projects would stop and I'm fine with that. Or, how about we hold on to all our own money and starve the whole corrupt lot of them. Seriously everyone, stop paying taxes today!!

@PMEWhite then your a libertarian not a republican, which is a party I would support. The problem is the US is so fucking big and has 50 states which have the right to rule themselves. Its hard to imagine it without a big government. But it is easy to imagine certain areas shrinking, such as the defense and DEA which are completely unnecessary and the biggest waste of taxpayers money.

Social Security is always solvent, it pays for itself so this idea that its together with the federal budget is ridiculous. Also like Obama said they raided the fund. 1 billion dollars in surplus for wars, pay it back no fucking crooked government!
