Hawai'i's Last Crown Princess

Princess Victoria Kaʻiulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawēkiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn (1875--1899) was proclaimed a princess in 1875 and the heir apparent or Crown Princess in 1891. Her mother, Princess Likelike, was the sister of the then ruling monarch, King Kalākaua while her father was Archibald Cleghorn, a horticulturalist and businessman originally from Edinburgh. In 1889, she was sent to study in England and became exiled in Europe as a result of the American-led coup against her aunt, Queen Lili'uokalani, in 1893. However, she made trips to Washington and other US cities to plead the cause of Hawaiian independence. In 1897, she was able to return to Hawai'i and the following year in 1898 became engaged to Prince David Kawānanakoa. However, four months after her engagement, the US went to war against Spain and declared Hawai'i a territory of the United States. In 1899, she died of pneumonia though many said she died because she could no longer bear the loss of her nation's independence.
