The main purpose of the roll is to place the heading of the vehicle on the proper inclination in relation to the equator. This allows the spacecraft to reach its intended destination in space. For example - The space station orbits at an inclination of 51.6 degrees inclined to the equator. So for an ISS mission, the shuttle rolls onto a 51.6 degree inclination for orbit. The roll also gives the shuttle performance advantages.

@deneb1795... as i understand it, in addition to jettisioning the solid rocket boosters over the water instead of on land.. most satelites travel in a east to west trajectory.. such as the ISS... the launch pads are oriented in a north-south trajectory.. this is why the shuttle completes the roll maneuver after liftoff...
music is annoying
