Here it is as promised the full Shostakovich 10th symphony producd entirely on computer. It has been longer than expected due to deciding to re-write the legato patches for the string sections. I'm still not totally satisfied with the legato, but it is much improved. Most of the time involved was simply pondering how to improve things with really only a small amount of the time used to actually try different ideas by re-writing that portion of the patch. Again the programs and sample libraries involved are.

Sibelius-for converting the midi file to a score
Audicity-for recording the audio
iMovie-for making the video file.

The video is just a raw conversion of the original midi file. It's only intended to provide SOME video. The important thing here (for me) is the audio portion. So there's no dynamics, no articulation markings, the trills and tremolos are written out as individual notes. It's really quite far from being an actual score of the work. I didn't feel like spendng another 40 to 50 hours cleaning up the score. It took long enough just to add the cross-faded transitions to the movie.
By all means feel free to leave any comments as to errors or things you might like to see improved. One thing that I am aware of already is that most of the double bass part is missing in the second movement. I really should get that fixed, but it may take an actual copy of the score to do so.

Finally the video may sound a lot more quiet than most other videos. I don't use any level compression in the audio portion. I believe in keeping the original dynamics completely intact. Of course, my patches may produce dynamic ranges which are grater than that in reality. I think this may be the case for some instruments. Comments in this regard would be welcome as well.

anyways....enjoy (hopefully)

  • note placement, note durations. There was essentially none of that in the original midi file. It was completely and utterly dry and mechanical. This is also why the Bass line is largely missing in the second movement. It sounds like, from listening to numerous recordings. that they're playing stacatissimo dotted halfs through a large portion, but the movement is so busy it's hard to say for sure.

  • Welll, to be honest that's just the way that the midi file I used as a basis was made. I had nothing to do with that as it is a file downloaded from the internet. It just saved me a lot of work for having to input the notes. If I didn't have that I seriously don't think I would have had the ambition to finnish the project. Even with the basic notes taken care of it still took me several hundred hours of work to finish this:dynamics, attacks, releases, tempi, accents, articulations, cresc., decres

  • Great job! Sounds really impressive even if you know that it's only a computer who is playing :-)

I listened almost to the entire symphony and sometimes even forgot that it's not a real orchestra playing here.

Only one (actually unimportant) question: Why is almost the entire symphony noted in C minor ? It's of course played in the right key but noted in an other???
