Experimental cancer drug IT-101 releases campothecin into cancer cells for effective treatment. We used a whole lot of trickery to make this piece for the PBS mini "Curious". The whole episode for which we did loads of graphics is at thirteen.org/curious . Animated by Jordan Bruner

  • How does IT-101 target only cancer cells?

  • It exploits the "shoddy" structure of cancer cells. The nature of cancer cells is that they grow quickly -in doing so their construction is poor. The cells' blood vessels are full of large wholes.

IT-101 is a large molecule which delivers Campothecin (that's the theraputic drug) . The molecule is too large to attack healthy cells, but fits right into a cancer cell.

  • yeah .. super interesting ...

  • Really interesting !!!

  • @XX1goodhalo2playaXX the it-101 would appear as a sugar to the body, as such white blood cells will not respond to them as a threat and hence they will not engulf it-101

  • wouldn't the white blood cells undergo phagocytosis on the it-101

  • the shape of vessales reminded me abt some thing ...Do u know why cancer is called like this "Cancer"... that's because the vessels suroundin the tumor " the crazy incontroled cells" make at the end a cancer's shape

May God prevent all of us from it :)

    Thx for the post
