  • Christian 'Fearless' didn't perform by giving the audience what they wanted. He was a real Artist and gave us what we needed: Authentic Art: Real Authoritative Creativity. This is the true nature of a 'Gift': Something given from beyond our merely animal realm, drawing us ever higher and beyond our blind and selfish limitations. Thus is the truth worth of Art. The Mockery of Art is in only giving us what we want; this is called Entertainment, AKA-- 'Self-expression'.

  • this video is one of the greatest violin videos ive seen. i think i once saw a segment of it a long long time ago, but never the whole thing.

  • Thank God there is much more to playing the violin than technical skill! Ferras was an infinitely better musician, and after all, the point of playing the violin is to make music/Art, so with the end point of playing the violin clearly in mind, Ferras was the better 'violinist'. If you really want to see perfect technique, watch Menuhin in his youth! Heifetz was a distant second to young Yehudi Menuhin, and Yehudi was a better musician than Heifetz, but not better than Ferras. IMHO

  • I think this is wonderful playing, but the point, as they say in The Art of the Violin, is all these artist play differently. No one who can play as well as any of the artists mentioned in these comments "stinks." They are all very fine musicians who interpret what they play differently, according to their conception of the music, their personalities, and their training.

  • I dont know why but I seem to think similar to semisavage about most of the points. first i very strongly prefer recordings by violinists of the older generation. secondly i find heifetz's playing dry most of the times. my personal favourites are the recordings by menuhin, ferras, szeryng, oistrakh, milstein, suk....

    Kogan, Oistrakh, Menuhin, Ferras, Heifetz and many more!

  • Andrew, have you 'witnessed' Ferras' Sibelius Concerto on youtube? Its a masterwork of REAL violinistic ART. Heifetz could not personally conceive of so deep and searching interpretation of any composition; he kept everything close to the surface, brilliant, clean, fast......and largely 'dead on arrival'. Heifetz was not willing to become personally vulnerable; while Ferras saw this as the whole point of playing at all. Heifetz played to live, while Ferras lived to play.

  • Yes, there surely is hype, and it was not completely unwarranted, by any means, but Heifetz was a master of working his image too, far beyond most musicians, who were/are busy developing their musicianship. Ive never seen any violinist with so many movie appearances as Heitetz, and all of them showing him as the hero/genius! No one worked so hard at personal image building in the very beginning of the 'Age of the Media' Look around, Andrew, (youtube), and youll see my point.

  • I agree that Heifetz plays faster and as cleanly, as he seems to play nearly everything fast, as if that were the point of playing at all, but I prefer Menuhin's interpretation as a work of music, not a gymnastic exhibition. Menuhin finds the music in this work even though it wasn't a very 'musical' work to begin with. Clearly, Wieniawski was writing this work as a vehicle for showcasing 'skill', so Heifetz follows that path alone, while Menuhin attempts to make music also: Music is the point.
