This technology is called "tele-existence system". The teleexistence means the scene in which you can talk to the fellow in a remote location but apparently within your reach at the same time.

This isn't going to work for all media. It would be mostly for 3D animated things. Imagine what a hassle it must be to shoot a traditional movie from every possible angle to get the footage you need. No matter how good your staff is, that's going to be insanely difficult.
But, with 3D graphic rapidly improving, and this technology still being in development, it's going to be fine once the time comes.
I'm really looking forward to the first fully 3D projector with touchable collision. :D
