For a complete lesson on age word problems, go to http://www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve "age" word problems, such as the following. Bret is 3 times as old as Laura. In 5 years, Bret will be twice as old as Laura. Find their ages now. Note that this problem requires a chart to organize the information. The rows of the chart can be labeled as Laura and Bret, and the columns of the chart can be labeled as "age now" and "age in 5 years". The chart is then used to set up the equation.

  • @cwalkmonthly 3x+12=2(x+12)-1 s 3x+12=2x+24-1==3x+12=2x+23== 3x-2x=23-12  x=11 :D

  • I GET IT NOW O: my algebra class has had a really hard time with this, but this helped a ton :D thanksh so much

  • @MrRayz21 with the problem set up, you use the FOIL method, so it would look like :

    3x+12=2(x+12)-1 which gives you

    3x+12=2x+24-1 (then)

    3x+12=2x+23 then:

    -2x -2x

    x+12=23

    get x by itself by subtracting 12 from both sides, you get 11. Since mary is 3x. Mary is 33.
