I have 2 bulging discs at L4-5 I need to strengthen my core but also need to regain my flexibility what would you recommend. My doc says yoga would be good for me.

Should I be tensing my arms and legs while both inhaling and exhaling during this pose? I've heard that this pose is good for your back, but I don't really feel much action going on there how I'm doing the pose. Any advice? Thanks a lot in advance.

uppityboot Tensing would not be the word I would use more like working and extending . Yes the legs and arms are firm. Back challenges come from surrounding areas once they can support more it helps . You are best to try the full yoga for beginners routine in out playlist for an all over stretch.
