JH brought a mischievousness and twinkle to his performance ( ex. he really enjoys playing out the word "spool") whereas HP plays it much darker, and in fact the set is literally darker. Also, JH is lame, while HP is in a wheelchair, and ostensibly can not walk at all, so when he scatters his tapes to the floor my first thought was that he can't retrieve them. I don't know if that reading is more "Beckett"-y, but it is a bit starker. Interesting choices both. Next step is to read the original.

Considering Pinter was Beckett's protege, it is particularly interesting to see this version. Perhaps close to Beckett's famously specific intentions, or, perhaps just one good version among many others. I am to see John Hurt in two weeks, so I'll compare!

Well, this is the 3rd version of this play I'm watching, so far John Hurt's is my favorite. Pinter reminds me too much of an undertaker, and the other dude I watched was more like a cartoon.
