Avira AntiVir is a great free program, one of the best free anti viruses out today, but one thing that sucks is the occasional popups that come with it. Watch to find out how to remove AntiVir popups.

Windows XP Pro:
1. Start -- Run -- type secpol.msc (Local Security Settings) or go to Control Panel, select Administrative Tools and click the Local Security Policy
2. Right-click on Software Restriction Policy -- Create New Restriction Policies
3. Right-click on Additional Rules -- choose New Path Rule
4. Click Browse and find the avnotify.exe file (C:\Program File\\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic)
5. Make sure the security level is set to Disallowed and click OK

Windows XP Home (and Media Center):
1. Boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly press F8 after boot)
2. Login under the Administrator account
3. Navigate to C:\Program File\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
4. Right-click "avnotify" Go to Properties Security Advanced
5. Look under the Permissions folder for a listing of all the system users. Do the following for all the users:
6. Edit Traverse Folder / Execute File Deny Click OK
7. Reboot (into Normal mode) when finished

Go to Start - Run.
Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Navigate through User Configuration - Administrative Templates - System.
Double click "Don't run specified Windows applications".
Enable it and click show.
Add "avnotify.exe".
Click OK on all open windows.
Restart.

Hope that helps!

  • This only works temporarily. The next time Avira updates, it will change the permissions back and pop-ups resume.

  • Thanks very much for this hack. Since Avira has now come out with the Ask Toolbar and something called Webguard, it has even more popups and nag screens than ever before. This technique stopped it all for which I am supremely grateful. A previous comment tries to say that Avira AntiVir is a virus. Ah, no it isn't. I've used it for ten years. It's a good application. Yes, this hack will work on any Avira edition.
