It's supposed to be an off-stage solo, a kind of narration to the dancing that goes on during this part. Jerome Robbins choreographed a ballet for Tony and Maria and two other couples to be performed during this song in the original production. Thematically, the fact that it is sung by a disembodied voice emphasizes the fantasy element of the sequence.

no nightmare sequence? i was waiting for the notes to turn dissonancy and the dream to go sour, but i guess it was cut
