( From http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0002100/bio)
Upham is an Army translator who appears somewhat suddenly a quarter-ways through the story. He states that he speaks French with a slight accent, but his German is "clean" with a slight Bavarian accent. Initially his presence in the film is seemingly for mild comic relief, as evidenced by his naiveté, his tendency to intellectualize and contemplate ideals when not necessarily appropriate, and his inability to demonstrate any talent whatsoever at cognitively bonding with the other soldiers who are far more practical and grounded in the brute intensity of war. Interestingly, however, his compassion and ideals find a reciprocating home in the similar concerns of Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), thus providing the opportunity for Upham to not only become an unexpected multi-dimensional character, but also the moral center of the group of soldiers suddenly tasked with offering their many lives in exchange for one.

  • I don't know about you guys but he's hot in the movie ;)

  • @jross2021 He's the biggest pussy in movie history. Also, the only person he killed was his only friend.

  • @jross2021 be quiet.

  • lol fucking hate this dude, don't care if it's a movie, if I saw him in real life, i'd knock him the fuck out, his character pissed me off so fucking much.

  • @clumsworth he still should have died its only a movie but FUCK everyone else died why didnt he....sure deserved it for his cowardly actions sobing on the stairs and repeatly freezing up find a deep hole lay down in it and shoot your self upham LMAO

  • while i have pity on him for being so scared he is a coward. its because of him that mellish died and he had the perfect opportunity to take out 5 Germans and save mellish. but you could argue he was a translator and had little experience with a rifle

  • @thepiggybanks @unleashedx72 - He WAS translator and he WASN'T a journalist. It's clear from Miller asking him to join them because he needs a translator. And thepiggybanks, "fubar" isn't a German word. It's a military acronym, hense why they all found it funny that he thought it was German.

  • @andyhuangit yes but I doubt he would've wanted the killer of both Miller AND Wade to be set free again. He learnt his lessons the frst time letting him go after killing Wade. Plus, I doubt they would want their killer let free, I'd want the Nazi shot dead too if he'd murdered me.

  • I think, after film's storyline, upham became veteran, killing many enemy, though he wasn't one of Ranger
