A-10 Warthog, Thunderbolt II at Pilsung Range, S. Korea

Although the A-10 can carry a considerable weight of disposable stores, its primary built-in weapon is the 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun. One of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown, it fires large depleted uranium armor-piercing shells at a rate of about 4,200 rounds per minute (50 rounds per second during the first second, 70 rounds per second thereafter). The massive shells and high muzzle velocity allow the Thunderbolt II to destroy heavily armored main battle tanks with as few as six direct hits. The gun is accurate as well, being capable of placing 80% of its shots within a 20-foot wide circle from a distance of 1 mile while the aircraft is in flight.

I was stationed at Osan in 97-98 in the 25th VFS...ACFT 185 (0:24) was my jet when she was at Moody AFB but moved to Osan in 2000 when the 70th shut down.

I was stationed at Osan AB back in '95-96. I used to love watching those A10s when I wasn't deployed for some exercise or partying in Songtan with the "juicy girls" and whatnot. Paradise for a 20 yr old back in the day besides the fact that you're a speedbump if the North ever gets the go ahead to invade from bigger brother.

some of these pilots are fuckin amazing - those gatling guns spew out so much ammo they HAVE to be accurate - i think they can waste all their ammo in under a minute if i remeber rightly...either way its somethin stupidly insane...

but like some pilots with hellfire missiles can be so accurate as to fire the missile through the window of a building...that shits crazy!

regardless of politics it simply looks and sounds cool! but i wouldnt wanna be in the way when that baby fires up!

A-10 uses depleted uranium for the GAU cannon. Obviously, we aren't going to put pilots in an irradiated capsule.
