Sonic 2 and Sonic CD were orignally going to be one big game. And Aquatic Ruin Zone was orignally a past version of Emerald Hill Zone.

you say its actually the sequel (which is why Metal is in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 2) well wikipedia says this time travel concept was in Sonic 2 for example Dust Hill (its in some sort of special cartridge I don't know)
