Dr. Burke D. Sorenson conducts the Salt Lake City Community College/Taylorsville Community Orchestra in the music to A Christmas Festival by Leroy Anderson. This non-auditioned full symphony orchestra rehearses once a week at the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Redwood Road Campus Administration Building in Taylorsville, Utah. This performance took place at Eisenhower Junior High School in Taylorsville, Utah on December 8, 2007 at 6:30 p.m.

SLCC

Salt Lake Community College is the largest two-year community college in Utah. Over 24,000 students attend classes at one of SLCC's three campuses or eleven branches throughout Utah. SLCC has open enrollment and serves the local community, with approximately 95% of the student body considered Utah residents. Of the enrolled student body, two-thirds aspire to eventually obtain four-year degrees.

History

The Taylorsville Community Orchestra is funded by the city of Taylorsville and SLCC. It was founded in 2003 by Richard Brunson. Mr. Brunson conducted the group until 2005 at which time Dr. Craig Ferrin took the podium. Dr. Burke Sorenson is the symphony's third conductor and has led the group since 2007.

  • everyone forgets that important triangle part!

  • we didn't have enough percussionists for this piece

  • Best oboe i've ever heard

  • I love this piece. My high school band is playing it. We played before we first went to the Rose bowl, so our band director thought it would be nice to resurrect it. It's a tough piece to play if you don't have an orchestra, though we pulled it off last time, I think we can do it again.

And I think the camera was placed in one of the worst places, so the sound is really off. When 'Deck the Halls' started, the oboe and clarinets sounded off.

  • This sound okay but ive heard better

  • were playing this song for our band this year for our christmas concert and its soo much fun

  • First of all, he needs to stop licking his fingers. Next, this is a college orchestra, not a middle school one. The flat instruments are not acceptable. The entire piece should have a lot of feeling to it. This rendition lacks that. Where are the chimes and bells in this production? There are none. It is quite apparent this piece was not rehearsed enough. I am a professional drummer and have played that piece a dozen times. When played correctly, you have the audience glued to you.

  • @babygap101 I agree!

  • isnt this faster or is my idea

  • Awesome! The unbalanced sound does the oboe justice lol. This is my second year in band and we are playing a version of this song (the change starts at 1:21) but we don't go this fast.

Is it just me or is it out of tune at :05?

  • wow. i wish i could play oboe that good, haha. im trying to tune mine right now and im having major difficulty. were playing this song in band at least i think we are. but its a really hard song for an oboe player thats only been playing for 3 years

  • I little out of time and a little out of tune on occasion, but not bad, ESPECIALLY for a community orchestra. LOVELY OBOE SOUND! Hahaha, it sounds wonderful. I think the camera was too close to the oboe section lol. Well done :)
