What I don't get is if these companies have the food why don't they just give it for free??

Hahaha they aren't holding back on a massive stockpile of food! When people go on their site they get money from advertisers and they use that to buy and send food to people. They use the idea of raising so many grains of rice because it's easier for people to relate to and visualise.
