Popular Calligraphy

To celebrate Chinese culture and the Year of the Ox, Jakarta is holding a Chinese calligraphy and painting exhibition at its international expo centre.

The art of Chinese painting has a long legacy. We are very thankfully to the Indonesian government for appreciating Chinese culture. Thanks to its support this exhibition was made possible. We have had a very good response from the public. We want to thank everyone."

Forty Chinese artists resident in Indonesia showcase over three hundred paintings.

We hope that the young ones will get to love calligraphy art, and that everybody will want to learn calligraphy.

Calligraphy artists from the Indonesian Art and Calligraphy Club give visitors a demonstration.

One painter managed to create thirty paintings in just three weeks.

[Tjin Sua Tjen, Painter]:
In just three weeks, I was able to finish these paintings, more than thirty paintings. I feel very thankfully to God, who helped me finish all of the paintings.

According to the club spokesperson, one needs a pure heart and a calm mind to do calligraphy.

[Susianawati R., Chair, Indonesian Art and Calligraphy Club]:
First, one learns how to hold the calligraphy brush and the ink. Sometimes one needs to press hard and sometimes light to make thick and thin brush strokes. But most importantly, one needs a calm disposition to make these paintings.

The Year of the Ox exhibition will run until this Sunday, February 8th.
