Final Edit, REBEL RACE 2011 Frederick MD

Lots of barber wire, dirt, mud, and disorganization at this years first event of this kind, around here. There were huge bolts sticking out of obstacles that people were cut on, slip-n-slides that broke down because the pumps failed, a girl seizing in the parking lot and puking on herself- and no event staff at any of the dangerous obstacles. I'm no "safety first" wuss either- but this was ludicrously dangerous for the average joe-schmo. We're all in decent shape and can take care of ourselves, so we really didnt care at all. But seriously, this NEEDS to be manned by staff and it NEEDS to have a few small insurances like ambulances, people to catch falling runners (there were 20+ foot walls to climb over!), and permanent water stations. The roving water tractors were nice, but some people NEVER saw a drop of water and ended up fairly sick.

We dont know why this was completely unmanned and we dont care. Next year, get some volunteers, managers, safety gear and common sense.

Mike

  • No offense to anyone.... but even if I get a scrap from barbed wire here or a gash from a bolt sticking out.. that's A LOT BETTER than what I went through at TOUGH MUDDER. this is a pity course lol. it took me over 3 months to heal from tough mudder, I had bruises the size of my entire forearm and my legs had cuts all over them from crawling in gravel. At least you get to climb up those walls by yourself! I'm really looking forward to being able to do that at this race.

Clearly it's a good time -- and obviously a large, fun, interesting obstacle course is going to cause a few injuries- it's not reasonable to be subjected to this type of danger. I'm a rock climber and of course we get injured and fall- this "fun run" was really fun, but if anyone was seriously injured, it would be negligence. If you get beat up by crawling in gravel, fine- but if there's scrap metal in the field you're running thru, that's unacceptable.

  • Wow, you guys look like you're having an awful lot of fun to be responding so harshly @carolyn. It doesn't look like she is making excuses for whatever organization you are referring to, just the fact that you blatantly went against the rules because you could. I get it, carolyn. Also, looks like there is water which one of your friends littered off the course. And its an obstacle race.. hence the obstacles. No? Have you done one of these races before? I had a blast though the org needs work!

A runner thew a water bottle to me because there were no trash bins in the rusty-farming-machinery-graveyards we ran through.

Didnt think we'd have to get Tetanus shots to do a fun run... But you're right! The sharp 4" bolts on the unmanned obstacles were fun! I loved witnessing uncontrollable puking and another convulsing woman in the parkinglot- staff alerted, not responding. And the best "obstacle" had to be the barbed wire that tangled a womans hair. SO MUCH FUN!!! You're RIGHT

  • @bubs38

None of my friends littered or left any garbage on the race property. We're not like that. Obstacles are one thing. 4" exposed bolts, running in improperly discarded farm machinery, and unnecessary hospitalizations are another. This place was a disaster. It was really fun tho. We had a good time. We're offering critique because we care.

Are you joking? My friends ran through fields of barbed wire, a junkyard of sheet metal, unattended 25 foot walls, 60% of the volunteers left before the race, 20% of the turns werent marked, and water wasnt available to many runners (heatstroke, shock, convulsions in parkinglot).

So WE rode our bikes w/ water and 1st aid to support our friends. At $75, we expect a bit more.

But you know better than us, I'm sure. You were there?

I dont have enough middle fingers for you people.

    srsly

  • @carolynlaich Did you NOT see the people jumping through the fire? There was nobody watching the runners!!!

Next year, I expect you to be there making sure everyone, including the organizers, dont do anything wrong.

You're so right. People who take care of their friends deserve to be threatened with legal action.
