@rail1435 It was built to the "Scotch Gauge" of 4' 6" in 1831 but converted to standard gauge by the North British Railway in 1845.

You drive on the wrong side of the tunnel.

i wanna walk through this tunnel but im afriad i might get stabbed half way through lol

I remember my pals and me going through this tunnel (in the 60's) and being petrified coz it was pitch-black the further you went in and was full of rats. Plus you had to negotiate round all the old sleepers and holes. All that plus the imagination of 7-8 year olds (as we were then) remains a very vivid memory !

why whas it closed?!

Was it standard gauge or narrow gauge railway?

@rail1435 Both. It was converted to standard gauge in 1845, 14 years after opening

Cool vid! Is it just me, or is coming back up that part of the path a total b*****d? It looks flat, but you slowly seem to become glued to the tarmac. Thanks for posting!

Thanks - it's definitely uphill coming back but the gradient is not too harsh - it had be gradual for the trains. It is v long tho as you probably gathered.

I never knew about this - where exactly is the tunnel?

it's near the Commonwealth Pool, opposite the Pollock Halls of Residence. You wont find it unless you look out for signs. As you can see at the beginning of the video the entrance looks like any suburban cul de sac
