Herrmann was a perfectionist, and could rail against incompetence with waspish irritability, but only when serving art - he was never petty. The interior of this rather nerdy-looking man glowed with incandescent passion, and his radiant score to "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" embodied his obsession that a truly great love can only fulfill its ultimate destiny in death and transcendence . At times he borrowed from Ravel - but nearly all others borrowed from him. We'll never see his like again.
