Bernard Herrmann may have been among the greatest of all film composers, but like all gifted creators, his personality was a lil on the irrascible side, as this extract from an original studio recording illustrates.

  • The RKO Studio Orchestra was hardly up to performing Benny's complex music. Any wonder why he was so cross with the players.

  • Herrmann was a perfectionist, and could rail against incompetence with waspish irritability, but only when serving art - he was never petty. The interior of this rather nerdy-looking man glowed with incandescent passion, and his radiant score to "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" embodied his obsession that a truly great love can only fulfill its ultimate destiny in death and transcendence . At times he borrowed from Ravel - but nearly all others borrowed from him. We'll never see his like again.

  • Benny suffered no fools gladly. He was a good friend and colleague for the last three years of his short life. I do miss him so.
