Lack of government intervention. Nobody took the industry serious and this allowed it to flourish underneath the radar of the government. As it becomes bigger, expect there to be unions, legal battles, and rising entry costs for new game studios.
I think the Nintendo 64 did. I have only played on it once and never owned one as I don't like Nintendos, but I digress. It just seems to be a good successor to the SNES.

Its not just the SNES hardware it self. I think it was Sega and Nintendo competing that revolutionise the game industry. If Sega did not exist we still be playing 8 bit games now on the NES. Because Sega came out with the Megadrive (genesis) Nintendo had to fight back with a SNES. Nintendo baked the pie, Sega wanted the pie and Sony ended up eating the pie...

i think the n64 also cause of mario 64 and alot of other games like. goldeneye, star fox ocarina of time, and etc. thats what i think.
