if you do any move immediately before hitting the ground, it cancels instantaneously and doesn't come out. All you basically did was jump backwards, turn around and grab.

dude that's awesome, I'll try it later since I use Mr. Game and Watch a lot, not my main but still I like how my friends react when they get their asses handed over to them by a dimensionally challenged character:D

The "odd slide" you're seeing has nothing to do with the back air. It has to deal with him landing, and game and watch having absolutely no turn around animation thus having the turn around grab look like a slide. Do it yourself without doing the back air and you'll see the exact same effect...
