Setting timing when the engine runs is the most accurate method to check timing (strobo light). The test light is good enough though, vw actually recommends it, it gets you in the ballpark and then can be checked with strobo. Some centrifugal dizzies should be set like 3500 rpm and set the advance to 32-36 degrees depending of many factors.

I wonder why they just didn't show the test light method.... It take 2 min to check the timing with that.

Some engines have ported spark advance and thus no vacuum at the vacuum advance line at idle when static advance is adjusted. It is not necessary to remove and plug the line on these engines as there is no vacuum affecting the adjustment.

Bloody dork, whenever you adjust ignition timing it is COMPULSORY to remove and plug the vacuum advance line to the distributor. Guess thats why they lost the war

Static timing will lead you astray if you don't really understand what timing is all about.. strcit adherence to setting a static adv/ret without checking the resulting timing curve can get you in deep trouble, from detonation (over adv.) to overheating and poor perf. (over retard)
