This train followed the Dallas Extra with UP 1995, first spotted at the Colton Diamonds, seen in the previous video I posted. The train gradually slows, yet the SD70ACe DPU's prime mover is still cranking out at the end, leading me to believe that this train was a bit underpowered for the near 2% grade up Beaumont Hill.

  • I'm sorry but thats NOT an Intermodal Train only. Sure it has the Containers at the end of the Train with a Load of Car Carriers at the Begining of it and you would call this one an Mixed LOADED Train. An Intermodal Train would have ONLY Containers and nothing else on Board. Sorry but I'm only calling it like I see it.

  • @OTRLongHaul: There are trains with Tropicana reefers mixed in with containers on this route also. Both this train and that train have the intermodal train symbols starting with I, K, or Z, not a mixed freight symbol like M or Q. I've never heard of the term "mixed LOADED train" from any of the railroaders.

  • Or it is possible that the engineer was slowing as approached the top of the grade so that when he began to descend that weight that he was dragging up did not begin to push the train down the grade. Since we can't see where the helper was cut off it's hard to say if it was underpowered or not. I think that the UP dispatchers have a pretty good idea of what power is needed to pull a train on it's route.

  • @jesterd14: It's possible, but I don't think he deliberately made the wheels slip - if you listen closely, you can hear the wheels almost slipping and SD70ACe's traction control working to the limit.

  • Don't worry, the slower it goes the more pissed off the Emd gets.

  • @cchan006 If the wheels are slipping, it is more under-weighted than under-powered, wouldn't you say? :)

  • @beeble2003 That high pitched whine you hear coming from the loco's is the wheel creep system working and on ac traction locos can get very loud. If you can hear it there is some controlled wheel slip going on. Here check this out type in youtube "up 5197" it's the wheels spinning video.

  • @cchan006 How can you tell by the sound that the wheels are "almost slipping"? How does that sound different from any other wheel that's not actually slipping. Most of the noise that people attribute to wheelslip is flanges grinding on tight curves, anyway.

  • @ussoldierrail Wow... who peed in YOUR cheerios this morning? Try decaf, maybe...

  • Diggin potatoes!

  • @cchan006 looks like an intermodal to me
