Dubbed Surf Highway 45, the coastal road between Hāwera and New Plymouth is famed for its surf breaks, which include Stent Road, Spot X and the Kūmara Patch. Taranaki locals have ridden the waves since the 1950s, and some became international champions. The region has also produced a number of surfboard designers.
