Frank Sinatra
Comp; Elton John
What have I got to do to make you love me
What have I got to do to make you care
What do I do when lightning strikes me
And I wake to find that you're not there
What do I do to make you want me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I say when it's all over
Sorry seems to be the hardest word
It's sad, so sad
It's a sad, sad situation
And it's getting more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad
Why can't we talk it over
Oh it seems to me
That sorry seems to be the hardest word
What do I do to make you love me
What have I got to do to be heard
What do I do when lightning strikes me
What have I got to do
What have I got to do
When sorry seems to be the hardest word
"Another idiot who can't sing, so he has to use this guys face?? You're F****ing nuts. Yes it's so sad."

@tbcass (*and supplesness..) If you want a song by Sinatra that might touch you try ''old man river'' by young Sinatra or ''I'm a fool to want you'' (which he co-wrote).
I prefer Bobby Darin in a lot of jazz standards to Sinatra, and Andy Williams or Dean Martin sometimes too.

@tbcass The older Sinatra simply didn't have the vocal range suppleness to be soulfull. He had the vocal range to sound 'cool'. He probably drank too much and smoked too much. This worn out aspect of his voice did have its advantages in certain songs though, because he somehow sounds like he speaks with authority. Especially That's Life and My Way.

i say he did a hell of a job in this version, sounding like himself and not emulating Elton. i don't understand the negative comments below.

@1980Houdini You are right that Sinatra was one of the smoothest, skillful and precise singers timing wise, all things important in the Swing Jazz era he came out of but, and this is my opinion, soulful singing throws all that out the window and instead involves more self expression and improvisation. I say this because his singing never hit me emotionally the way more modern singers from the 50's on do. As I said it's my opinion and you are free to disagree. I still love his singing though.

@tbcass I agree with u, in that this song was not suited to Frank; mainly down to the speed variations, and by 77' his powers were definately declining. However to say he was not soulful is a tad harsh. Sinatra in his 30 year peak had a scarily soulful voice and imaculate timing. But agiain, point taken, he is crao in this piece. 'If you go away' should back me up on the point. Peace.

A song like this must be sung with a lot of feeling and soul. Sinatra was a great singer but was never a soulful one. He just doesn't cut it here. Ray Charles, Joe Cocker and of course Elton John himself sang it much better.

@TheRealCritique Sinatra always tried new material in music and lyric sence. As one of the best in the world lyrical singers and musical genius as well as a top entertainer, he decided to sing this live because he liked and his vocals at the moment for a 62yr old singer are excellent. So, i believe that this not sad at all. Conversely this make us happy to have the opportunity to hear a 1977 song with a sound of an older generation. And the result is very good.
