Written in 1992, the Trio for Flute, Clarinet and Piano comes across kicking like a group class in Tae Bo. The ensemble, working almost entirely together, create an engaging and unusual sonority with an orchestral dimension. The dirge-like Lento and the evocative and starlit Andante provide constrasting energy. Though it is written in five movements the Trio might be heard in two halves, with the first four movements grouped a a series of tableaus that culminate in an extended fianale. The finale is a laboratory where elements of each prior movement are mixed and transformed. Each tableau is interrupted or frozen; the finale flows. -Jeffery Johnson
