African Americans may be the nation's most religious minority, but the churches and religious leaders don't speak for many of us.
Today as in the past, many African Americans question religion and religious institutions. More and more of us stand for reason over faith. Freethought over authority. Critical thinking in place of superstition. Many of us are nonreligious; some are nontheistic.
African Americans for Humanism supports skeptics, doubters, humanists, and atheists in the African American community, provides forums for communication and education, and facilitates coordinated action to achieve shared objectives.
In an irrational world, those who stand for reason must stand together.

Humanity is finally getting somewhere. Let's leave the ancient religious books where they belong, in history class.

I'm really glad to see Black Humanist, Atheists, uniting in an organization that makes no doubt about what it stands for, and especially announcing their Atheism.
I see this as a difficult struggle for Blacks who make this choice bcuz Christianity has been such a deep & damaging part of their history, where it likely helped them in early years.
I see the same thing in my Native brothers & sisters in S. America who have been enslaved in mind & body by the Catholic church for 5 centuries.

How better to control the public than with their own minds - pretty much telling them if they break the rules of the society they will be given a fate worse than death and if you behave you get unimaginable pleasure in the afterlife. Empty promises that cannot be verified but will do well in capturing the imagination of the uneducated, sick, poor, etc. I think religion is in the running for the #1 worst thing that humans have ever created.

I live in Canada (I was born here), I've only visited Somalia once. While I don't mind personal religion - much of organized religion is intentionally structured as to dis-value other systems of belief and openly attack/criticize. In the case of Abrahamic religion they go to the point of proselytizing as much of the masses as they can. This is the most efficient way to push and spread religion and religion back in it's foundation was more a form of governance rather than belief.

I couldnt agree more . I sure hope your not in Somalia ? I consider myself a Christian but do not attend church or push my beliefs on others . I do believe that Islam is not a religion just a political ideology used to control it followers .

Islam is also a plague on the African continent (I'm a Somali Atheist). I think that the abrahamic religions as a whole can be linked to the introduction and preservation of ignorance, bigotry, religious violence, and general isolationism of many African countries. Africa as a whole would be a lot farther without religion and religion is one obstacle that is a major roadblock of progression for many African, and third world countries.

You say Humanism is a belief in nothing but then you say its Marxism, this doesn't make sense. Humanism is an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human matters rather than divine or supernatural matters. Marxism is an economic & sociopolitical worldview based on ideas that view social change in terms of economic factors. There totally different from each other. Your strawman only goes to show your lack of knowledge in the area you seek to engage. Again, educate youself.

once again.. humanism predates marxism by over 2000 years. how can they be the same thing? Marxism may have some type of principals taken from humanism. would you say a muslim practices judaism? they have the sames stories of adam and eve, abraham and noahs ark. Try not to be such a simpleton
