Sprout Savvy interviews with Dr. Barry Sears about the Zone Diet, inflammation and his new book, Toxic Fat. Dr. Sears explained that you need to keep your hormones in a zone through the diet to maintain a healthy weight. When your hormones move out of the zone, you feel hungry.
There are two different types of inflammation. One type of inflammation causes pain. Dr. Sears describes the other type of inflammation as cellular inflammation. It doesn't hurt, which is why it can go unnoticed for years. This is the type of inflammation that can affect heart health and cause a variety of other inflammatory conditions. Cellular inflammation is caused from the overconsumption of omega-6 fatty acids, which come from foods and oils, such as sunflower oil, canola oil and safflower oil. High levels of insulin, from processed carbs, and high levels of omega-6 fatty acids will cause inflammation. To combat the inflammation, you need to adjust your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish, such as salmon, and fish oils are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Sears also recommends cod liver oil as the most important source of omega-3s.
When eating, divide your plate into three sections. Fill one third with protein the size of your palm. Fill the rest with vegetables. Put a pinch of heart-healthy fats, such as guacamole, olive oil or slivered almonds, for healthy meals. Dr. Sears also discussed his new book, Toxic Fat.

  • great info & video thanks !!

  • I really wish you would have gotten his suggestions on getting the proper amount of protein on this diet without using soy protein powder or processed soy products with a vegan diet.
