Things are going to go wrong if you work in the music business or any other business for that matter. Still, in this new music business and this new world of social media, as well as the speed and pace of how information is shared, a good reputation is something to have, keep and protect today in the music industry.

Being a jerk, disrespectful, hard to work with, flat out not nice to many and mean to others will build up a bad reputation that is not going to help you.

As a music consultant, I have sat with a number of bands that give off this bullshit higher than though attitude that often comes from something they saw from one of their heros or in the way that they are emulating another artist. There are still going to be pricks out there, but the day of getting away with being a total prick and getting the work are reducing dramatically.

Take it down a notch. It doesn't matter how right you are or how wrong someone else or something else is. Protect your reputation, because the word will get out that much faster. At the same time, when you need help, something fixed, something changed or whatever, be nice.

You might be pissed off and again, have every reason to be furious, but the more you can keep it respectful, keep your cool and keep your composure, the more someone is going to want to help fix what ever issue it is that you are having or complaining about.

And in the end, after doing all you can in certain situations, there is the flip side of the coin, like Patrick Swayze said in Roadhouse....

"I want you to be nice until its time not to be nice."
