Your twelve step "program" is a cult by definition. cult --noun
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

While 12-step methodology is part of our program (and the most effective part), it is only one small piece. The SouthCoast Method is a three part program blending holistic, medical and spirituality resulting in a very effective treatment program. The first definition of a "cult" still doesn't apply and especially doesn't apply to our program. Thanks for your coment.

The definition of cult is "A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader." The 12-step program specifically excludes a leader (Twelve Traditions #2 "For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority - a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.")

I agree, 12 step programs have not evolved and their techiniques are hurting many others like me. Please if you could tell what are your stats for recovery, and then I might believe that really 12 step programs work. Thanks

Over 80% of our clients that complete our 90 day program stay sober for 1 year. My personal best was 7 days over the last 20 years before trying SouthCoast's program. It worked for me. I'm very proud that the program of Alcoholics Anonymous taught me acceptance and self reliance; I don't have to blame institutions or individuals for problems as I only have to look in the mirror.
