  • Yeats wrote the poem on the eve of the Irish war of independence - contemporary writers were responding to the imminent civil war by writing poems about ancient heroes and fairies.

Yeats' poem reminds us that it is more fun to think about nice things than to face the truth.

Whether that makes it 'better' or not - Yeats leaves up to you.

  • Based off of The Philosophy of Composition, do you think that Edgar Allan Poe would approve of this poem?

  • One of favorite poems of all time. I've even taken the sung version and put it to 'The Vincent' video in my area. The poem is so entrancing, it really does take you away.

  • You make an excellent point. Yet all are destined to be seduced. A child cannot be totally shielded from the world. The seduction of the world is a powerful thing - anyone can succumb to it, no matter how much he or she has been loved at home. Even the love of God was not compelling enough to stop Man from tasting the forbidden fruit. Nevertheless, the relationship between the parent and the child does have a bearing on the degree to which a child can be distracted.

  • excellent got an e-mail from your blog about this , thank you, excellent rendition

  • very, very nice. thanks!
