30+ years ago, cavers cut the grate and went into the cave all the way down to the tube where Collins was trapped. They wrote a book about it all called "Trapped", and if you are even mildly claustrophobic you can't read it without having panic attacks and nightmares.
Why the place was ever called Sand "Cave" is a mystery to me... there is no cave; Collins was only LOOKING for a cave. The "cave" itself is nothing but a body-sized sinkhole that most people can't even fit into.

Funny! I like! But, if you really want to impress the crowd, hacksaw the grate off that sinkhole that passes for a cave, vaseline yourselves up and worm your way 155-feet down that hole and bring back the electric bulb used to keep Floyd Collins warm during the rescue attempt. :)
