Some of New York’s cats live here. And some, like Matilda live in a lap of luxury. Here at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan Matilda is an icon. This fluffy rag doll cat has been with the hotel for the last 14 years. [Alice de Almeida , Matilda’s Assistant]: The hotel has a history of cats in the 1930s. Wet and bedraggled cat came wandering in and the hotel owner at the time Mr. Frank Case kept the cat. Because he was the ultimate hotelier and that’s what you do, you hospitable and it just became a part of the hotel history. Matilda herself is very hospitable. [Alice Almeida , Matilda’s Assistant]: Most guests that walk through the door will get greeted by her, she’ll come up, she sniff new luggage, she’ll make sure the guests are comfortable. It’s Carloyn Seward’s second time at the hotel, and she and her daughter were taking a well-earned break. [Carolyn Seward, Hotel Guest]: When we were checking out she was on the counter, where you check out, sleeping right by the bowl of apples that they put out and she’s just so cute. [Alice Almeida , Matilda’s Assistant]: She’s not particularly fond of cats but she does like dogs, there’s that dog that comes in and visits her a couple times a week, they sit on the bell cart together and discuss what’s going on in the world. These two gentlemen think having a cat around adds a sense of comfort to the hotel. [Isaac Mishan, Property Developer]: I saw the cat on the counter, and I said “Jay, Jay look the cat”, because it looked so beautiful. [Jay Hochfelsen, Attorney]: It was great when the cat came by, wanted to jump on Isaac’s lap, Isaac was afraid and then the cat went under the couch and you came searching for it. This legendary cat has her own Facebook page. And this August she will be celebrating her 105th birthday in cat-years, and like last year, she will host a cat fashion show. Some of her best friends will don their favorite frocks to raise money for feline-friendly-charities. There is a saying
