Performed by Andrew Schloss at the Third Annual MISTIC Concert, University of Victoria, November 29, 2007 (World Premier).
This piece combines Ajay Kapur's MahaDeviBot, an autonomous 12-armed robotic instrument, with the radiodrum, a virtual instrument that tracks musical gestures in three dimensions.
The MahaDeviBot serves as a mechanical musical instrument that extends North Indian musical performance scenarios, striking 12 different percussion instruments gathered from around India, including frame drums, bells, finger cymbals, wood blocks, and gongs. The machine even has a bouncing head, which can portray tempo to the human performer.
In this piece, the radiodrum sends musical commands to the robot, while at the same time modifying the live acoustic sound of the robot. Thus, the radiodrum controls the physical sound-generation of the robot and simultaneously modifies its acoustic sound via signal processing. This allows the performer to both activate the robot and manipulate the sound of the instruments in real time as if they were sonic taffy.
