Javed: Pak Poverty vs Ministers' Expenses

Javed Chaudhry - host of Kal Tak program in Pakistan - describes the lavish lifestyle, fancy privileges, and exorbitant expenses of federal ministers in Pakistan. The country spends nearly six (6) crore rupees annually on the upkeep of each federal minister while devoting less than Rs 200 and Rs 150 annually on health and education, respectively, of each Pakistani citizen. To add insult to injury, despite being an impoverished third-world country utterly dependent on foreign aid and loans, Pakistan has the largest cabinet in the world! Per Javed, an astonishing 92 persons enjoy ministerial rank and privileges in the Zardari-led government.

Javed is correct that politics in Pakistan is a business, and not, a public service. Given Pak's status as a third-world country ranked among the top-10 failed states - and bearing in mind its sinking economy, currently on life-support by the U.S. - it is shocking to hear that it boasts the largest ministerial cabinet in the world. How can Pak have any hope of development when its spends 6 crore per minister per year while devoting less than $400 per person for education and health-care.
