Bernie was born with cerebral palsy, which affected all four of his limbs, however he chose not to live the life his doctor said he would. Bern set a World record when he became the first wheelchair bound person to reach the top of Africa's highest mountain...Mt Kilimanjaro -- pushing himself all the way!
Bern is a man who will not be stopped by obstacles or adversity. He constantly sets himself new goals and challenges. He breaks boundaries every day. To list just a few -- the first wheelchair Rotary Exchange Student, obtained a driver's license, has bungee jumped, has tubed behind a motor boat and completed a degree in Financial Management.
In June 2005, Bernie returned to Mount Kilimanjaro to repeat his amazing accomplishment. Unfortunately, due to the team being hit by altitude sickness and severe cold, they were unable to summit. This "climb" was documented by a team from MNET's Top Magazine & Actuality Programme Carte Blanche and the story was aired on 3 July, 2005 and again on 15 January 2006, due to popular demand!
Bern believes that with the right outlook, ANYTHING can be achieved
