Performing monkeys trained to beg for food and money is a common sight on Jakarta's streets. This report uncovers the uncomfortable mix of animal and human suffering behind a cruel business.

"The attitude to animals is that you can do anything with them that you want", Femke of the Jakarta Animal Aid Network says. She argues that it is not only the monkeys being exploited, but also the street orphans using them to scrape a living. But this business brings food to the table in a city rife with poverty. "It's a tradition", one handler shrugs.

It really does a sophisticated matter among these people. They perhaps do not want to do that kind of activity, however, the economic circumstances have left them no choice. Many people who live below the poverty line are struggling to survive each day. The only way to resolve this social matter is the government itself. These people need help from the government. We CAN'T just say we must stop this... think in their position who try to feed their family.

@Fogtrill I couldn't agree more. It never ceases to amaze me how many outright racist comments get posted to videos showing life among people who use animals directly to support themselves, posted by people who benefit from the use of animals by proxy.
