video of CSX Y111 switching the Athens yard with B36-7 5816. this is not one of my best movies but i have uploaded it because i think some people would find the B36-7 interesting as B-boats arnt so common anymore and the flying switch was quite interesting to watch. my scanner ran out of batterys right after i arrived so i was railfanning blind, when the crossing gates on the next road went down i moved to the other side of the track thinking it was a mainline train and i wanted a different angle, i had to rush back over to get shots when i figured out it was a local and was also trying to get some still pictures of it too. To save time the crew does a flying switch by shoving the cars back past the switch and then applying the handbrakes, the handbrakes are then released and the car rolls down the slight grade into the siding. The police were investigating something near the tracks and i guess they wanted to CSX to stop running trains while they investigated as then they parked their engine on the main at the depot and turned the light off, which is when i decided it wouldnt be a good day and left. pretty bad day of railfanning but try and enjoy the video.

  • lol, i didnt think this vid would be such a hit.

basically they are performing a sort of flying switch to save time. first they shove the cars back and uncouple and stop the engine while the cars roll past the switch, brakeman applys the handbrake, throws the switch and then releases the handbrake so the cars roll down the slight grade into the siding.

  • Great video! The Santa Fe had somthing like that on Cajon pass in the steam era wherby the helpers would back the caboose up an incline track and they would set the breaks on the caboose and alowe the helpers to back past the switch, once in the clear, the caboose would coast back to the train and ooward it would go.
