Great video! The Santa Fe had somthing like that on Cajon pass in the steam era wherby the helpers would back the caboose up an incline track and they would set the breaks on the caboose and alowe the helpers to back past the switch, once in the clear, the caboose would coast back to the train and ooward it would go.
lol, i didnt think this vid would be such a hit.
basically they are performing a sort of flying switch to save time. first they shove the cars back and uncouple and stop the engine while the cars roll past the switch, brakeman applys the handbrake, throws the switch and then releases the handbrake so the cars roll down the slight grade into the siding.
