The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed indigenous to Southern Africa. Its European forebears can be traced to the early pioneers of the Cape Colony of southern Africa, who crossed their dogs with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the Khoisan people (referred to by the colonists as "Hottentots").
In the earlier parts of its history, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has also been known as Van Rooyen's Lion Dogs, the African Lion Hound or African Lion Dog—Simba Inja in Ndebele, Shumba Imbwa in Shona—because of their ability to harass a lion and keep it at bay while awaiting their master to make the kill.

@harley8327 Agree. I think the dog know it's the owner who's sneaking around and therefore it doesn't react until late. RR's can sometimes look like they're asleep but somehow they still know what's going on nearby and can wake up instantly.

@SaadcoreDK , the ridge on a Rhodesian Ridgeback is actually a deformity, a type of Spina Bifida, and is only retained in the breed because of its striking appearance. It is common for pups to be born 'slickback' (without the ridge/Spina Bifida), but historically these have been culled. Many modern vets regard the culling of a healthy pup for aesthetic reasons unethical, so some 'slickbacks' are sold as pets. I have two, which you can see on my channel.

So typical, my Beau if he does bark it is from the couch! But sleep is most definitely preferred.
