Open wells have provided fresh water for drinking throughout centuries. Any activity which decreases quantity and quality is immediately reflected in the open well. The water levels drop or they have bacteria, iron, nitrates depending on how humans behave with the catchments, the recharge zones and the groundwater exploitation. Wells are indicators as much as providers of water. Understanding and embedding in modern water and landuse demand situations will be a challenge.
