Here I show you my latest creation, the home-made 2X72 belt grinder. Supplies I used:
1. (1) 4hp single phase 120v air compressor salvaged from used air compressor. (paid 80$ used a while back, but otherwise free because I already had it & you can get a broke one off of craigslist for free) - 0$
2. (1) leaf spring (junkyard) - 10$
3. (4) roller skate wheels (rollerskates from goodwill) - 5$
4. (1) small motor pulley (grainger) - 11$
5. (1) plastic golf bag tote/caddy (whatever those things are called) wheel - (golf bag tote from goodwill) - 5$
6. (1) large sheave pulley with spacer - (grainger) - 65$
7. (1) light switch - (sears) - 5$
8. (1) Craftsman arbor-type bench grinder on workbench - (family heirloom) - 0$
9. (2) gate hinges - (sears) - 6$
10.(2) bungee cords - (already had them) - 0$

total - 107$

Burr King 2 X 72 belt grinder (http://www.quantumtool.com/burrking98830.html) - 2905$

savings - 2792$

and mine is more powerful and has a flat platen feature on the back.

  • 4hp my ass!!! impossible to have a 4hp on that size/voltage specially shit from Walmart. They might as well put 1000hp heavy duty lifetime warranty.

  • @scavenom2008 yeah I agree. seems unlikely that something on 110V can make 4 hp. Thats what it said on the compressor though. Probably over-rated if not total over-stated.

  • Could I use a motor from a washer/ drier or fridge/ freezer? Anybody know where I can get a good but affordable contact wheel?

  • @JaKeth3snake I have a motor from a dryer that I was going to use, but it has 8 wires coming out. I dont know what they're for so i gave up on that. actually i dont think it would have been powerful enough anyways. contact wheel: no i don't know, thats why i made mine.

  • Instead of Skate wheels you can use Idler pullies for Timing belts. I did a few Quick fixes for a friend And since most of them have A Convex or Concave surface they can fix the problem even under heavy side load.

    neet sander *****

  • @M1ST3RHYDE hey thats a great idea, thanks!

  • The one thing i would say as a felow knife maker is you should really replace the plastic drive wheel. that is just so dangerous, i calculated your belt speed from guessing your pully and drive wheels size and i came up with between 3500-4500 SFPM if that is a 3600 RPM motor. and at thoes speeds if that wheel was to come apart it could kill you. one made from plywood would be safer. there is a companey that makes wheels that are cheep. if you want help finding one let me know.

  • Thats the most ghetto grinder I have ever seen. It truely is amazing. The belt could do with being a tiny bit tighter but other than that its fine.

  • Great job!!!!!

  • 65 bucks for a pully from grainger? buddy, its time for you to hit the local fleas or ebay or craigs list.

  • Holy Shit! It's Bob saget!!.

  • For future reference, attic fans (aka whole house fans) have a nice pulley wheel on them. If you're in a rural area, chicken houses have larger fans, with larger pulleys on them. Worst case scenario, could be a source for motor and a pulley, in one shot.

  • Epic! Sick skills my friend, Macguyver would be proud!

  • WOW! You did an excelent job. I do the same thing. If I can make it I won't buy it.

  • @strantor those ratings are based on a momentary stall the energy spikes to 4 hp for a tenth of a second so they rate it at that. the most you can get from 110volts is 1.5 hp from a farm duty motor and that's even pushing it!

  • You did a great job for min money. You should have gone a size smaller on the motor pully and had anyone with a metal lathe machine it to fit. It's a dead simple 5 min job, and you would be able remove it and know it is running true.

Next one is a biggie. Unless you want to kiss the running linisher belt, loose the strings on the sweat shirt when your around any machinery.

    All the best

  • Dude's got skills! :)
