The first plunge of the day, at 1:00 PM, is underway. Participants run into the 30-degree waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and then run back out before hypothermia sets in. Some people lingered in the water for a moment or so, some only went in up to their knees, and others completely went under before coming back out. There was also a lot of screaming and silliness in the water, for sure.

Plungefest 2011, aka the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge, was an event held on January 29, 2011 at Sandy Point State Park near Annapolis, Maryland. Participants jumped into the cold water of the Chesapeake Bay to help raise money for Special Olympics.

  • Kudos to those people that went underwater in the cold. I did the polar plunge back in January. It was about 20 degrees in Lincoln. Very cold morning. Thankfully it wasn't windy which would make it even worse.

  • @HuskerIsNumberOne 20 degrees was the water temperature or the air temperature? Usually the water is a few degrees warmer than the air.

  • @schuminweb Air temp.

  • I think the whole point of polar plunge is for those people doing it to submerge their heads underwater for a second.
