What do Extra tomahawks do?

They go into your inventory screen, so if you die you can still come into the stage with a tomahawk. Item drops get more rare as you progress in the game.

Watching your LP of this inspired me to play it again, I remember playing it on the original NES and everything.

If I can offer any hint, it would be to go for the second egg that comes down in Choose An Egg, since that egg seems like the one that has the 2000 point and 1up bonuses the most often.
