The melody of this song is from the Japanese song "Sayon's Bell" (Sayon No Kane). The bell was made in honor of a Taiwanese native girl, Sayun Hayun, who drowned while guiding a Japanese traveler across a bridge during a heavy rainfall in the late 1930's. The Chinese words have no relationship to the Japanese lyrics. The Japanese song was part of a movie in which singer LI Hsiang-lan (Yamaguchi Yoshiko) played the role of Sayun Hayun.

Minor correction: I thinks the composer's name is actually 古賀政男 (Koga Masao). 渡辺はま子 sang the original, サヨンの鐘 (莎鴦之鐘) in 1941.
