"That night we were walking along the shore,
The sea was murmuring its song
And just then, during that stroll
I felt that I lost my heart somewhere.

Fishermen have been telling me today
That it was you who found it among the waves
They saw how you bent down,
They saw how you took it up.

It's such a funny thing, Darling,
For you two hearts will be beating from now on,
While I am, being so madly in love,
supposed to live completely without a heart ? (...)"

Original version recorded by Leshchenko for Bellacord, Riga, 1935 and in Poland as a tango, two years later.
In Polish versions, the information about the composer were never true: on Demar's record it is written to have been composed by O. Strock and on the post-war record of Wiera Gran, it is denoted as a folk melody.
I would trust in this case the Russian recording of P. Leshchenko where the music and lyrics are ascribed to Georg Severskij.

  • Beautiful tenors!!! Wonderful pictures! Those old views of the Crimea show the melancholy of the Russian version so precise. And the tango version and the views of the Baltic shores - super!

    Thank You!

  • I am so pleased that you felt...

  • Yes, it is an old Russian Romance, which might have been written even earlier, if not much earlier than its recording with a Legendary Peytr Leshchenko.

  • Thank you for your attention.
